What is the silent period? Why does it happen? How can you help your students move out of the silent period and gain confidence in their new language?

In Episode 144 of the Equipping ELLs podcast, host Beth Vaucher tackles the silent period, a critical phase many newcomer English language learners experience when they enter a new language environment. The silent period is a natural part of language acquisition where students may not speak much, as they are absorbing the new language and making connections between their first language and English.

However, it’s essential to help your students not stay in this phase, which could lead to feelings of isolation or frustration. In this episode, Beth shares five actionable strategies to support your ELLs and help them to overcome the silent period more quickly:

  1. Create a Safe and Welcoming Environment: Foster a supportive classroom culture where students feel comfortable taking risks and making mistakes.
  2. Incorporate Visuals and Non-Verbal Communication: Use visuals, gestures, and body language to bridge the language gap.
  3. Provide Low-Stakes Speaking Opportunities: Encourage simple responses in low-pressure settings to build confidence.
  4. Use Repetitive and Predictable Routines: Establish routines that make students feel secure and promote participation.
  5. Celebrate Small Successes: Recognize and praise every effort your students make toward using English.

These strategies will help you empower your ELLs to move beyond the silent period and confidently use their new language in your classroom.
